Major League Baseball Player. The right-hander blanked the Boston Braves 4-0 in his big-league debut on Sept. 8, 1928 but enjoyed his most fame as a 41-year-old relief pitcher for the Chicago White Sox in 1946. After his 1-4 debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1928, he didn't win another game until called up by the St. Louis Browns seven years later when he shut out Detroit 1-0 on three hits on Sept. 22, 1935, outdueling Schoolboy Rowe. He went 3-2 that year and was 7-16 with a 6.00 earned run average in 1937, resulting in a pink slip to the minor leagues. His exile lasted seven more years before he was purchased by the White Sox, and Caldwell went 6-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 1945. It was the following season when he set the league on fire with his work out of the bullpen. He was 13-4 and had a 1.06 ERA into late September until the Yankees pounded him for three runs on Sept. 18 and the St. Louis Browns added four more on Sept. 21. He wound up at 2.08 ERA. He tailed off to 1-4 in 1947 and was sent to the Boston Red Sox late in the 1948 season. His eight-year totals were 33-43 with a 4.69 ERA and 25 saves.
