Thomas Bowne was baptized on 25 May 1595 at the Church of Saint Giles in Matlock, Derbyshire, England, a son of Anthony Bowne.


He married ______ ______ circa 1621. Although Bowne family of Flushing, Long Island by Edith King Wilson (published in 1948; page 3) claims that the wife of Thomas Bowne was named Mary and that she died in Matlock on 8 August 1647, there is no such record in the Matlock burial register, nor is there other record of her name. He emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts with his children John Bowne and Dorothy Bowne in 1649.


He removed to Flushing in 1651.

A shearman was a clothworker who raised the surface of woolen cloth and then sheared it to a smooth surface, or a cutter of woolen cloth.

Thomas Bowne (bp. 25 May 1595) was the father of three known children.


1. Truth Bowne, born circa 1622.

2. John Bowne, baptized on 9 March 1627.

3. Dorothy Bowne, baptized on 14 August 1631.


NOTE: The dates of baptism for Thomas Bowne, John Bowne and Dorothy Bowne are from the personal journal of John Bowne and were copied during a return visit to Matlock. The Matlock parish registers prior to 1637 have been lost in the interim.
