Albert Bartz, one of ten children of August H. Wilhelm and Friederike Luise (Last) Bartz, was born June 4, 1846, in Barkow, Pomerania, Prussia. When in his mid 20's, Albert immigrated to the United States. According to his Naturalization Record of October 10, 1881, Albert arrived in the U.S. at the port of New York in June of 1869. Albert first settled in Watertown, Wisconsin, then in the Milwaukee area, where he married Dorothea Munz on December 28, 1972. By the time of the 1880 census, Albert and his family had moved to Iowa, first to Newburg Township, Mitchell County, and then to Union Township, Worth County, near Grafton, in the same area where four of his brothers, August, Johann (John), Bernhardt (Bernard), and Herman, also settled. All were engaged in farming.

Albert and Dorothea (Dorothy or Dora) were the parents of five children: Emilie Rosina Johanna "Amelia" (Bartz) Lange, Hulda Anna Ulricke (Bartz) Engle, Wilhelm Michael Bartz, Dorothea Albertina Emilie Bartz, and Richard Johann Bartz.

Albert's death on December 3, 1928 was due to heart failure. Services were held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa, with the Rev. H.L. Lechner officiating. Burial was in the Grafton Cemetery.
