John Alexander was born to George Alexander, a travelling chimney sweep and Lucy in Cholderton. His mother died young and he was taken in by Luke Bull in Andover as a child chimney sweep. He later married Hannah Bull, Luke's oldest daughter. He came to Monmouth and set up a business as a chimney sweep in Monmouth on his own account.
