Joshua Hathaway was born August 18, 1761 in Suffield, Connecticut. Private Hathaway served in Vermont during the Revolutionary War. He married Elizabeth Lord February 19, 1791 in Bennington, Vermont. Mr. Hathaway was the first Master of the Roman-Hatheway Masonic Lodge. For many years he served as judge of the court of common pleas, the surrogate court, and also served as Post Master. The Honorable Joshua Hathaway's headstone reads "to him was assigned the honor of breaking ground on commencing that great and beneficial work, the Erie Canal, on July 4, 1817". Private Hathaway died December 8, 1836 at the age of 75 years.
