William served from 23 July to 5 December 1778, when he was about 16 years old, as a private under Capt. John Wentworth. He enlisted again about 1 January 1781 and served as a private in Capt Thomas Hartshorn’s Company, Col. Michael Jackson’s regiment until 17 December 1783. He was stationed at White Plains, Philadelphia and West Point. Son of John Hamilton Jr (1733-1813) and Mary Mason (1736-1799). Married Rachel Lufkin (1766-1823) in 1787. Grandson of John Hamilton [1709-1767] and Betty (Chandler) Hamilton [1713-1772], the original settlers from Scotland to Maine. Both are believed to be buried on Chebeague Island, Maine, where their son Ambrose [1735-1795] lived with his family.
