Guy Thomas “Griff” Griffis, 70, passed away on October 1st, 2014 in Lubbock, Texas.
Griff was born in Dallas, Texas on September 27th, 1944 to Robert L. and Thelma Griffis.
Griff moved to Lubbock from Dallas in 1963 to play football and baseball for Texas Tech University, where he earned multiple accolades. While at Texas Tech, he was captain of the football team. He won the Golden Helmet Award twice for “Back of the Week,” and in 1965 Griff and the Red Raider team participated in the Gator Bowl. When Griff arrived at Texas Tech, he said his most important goal was to win the Dell Morgan “Most Courage” Award. As a result of his resolve, Griff was awarded the “Football Player Displaying Most Courage” in 1966.
After college, Griff was a dedicated supporter and booster for Texas Tech. In this capacity, he established scholarships in the name of Terry McWhorter, a former teammate, and John Conley, a former coach. Griff was a loyal employee for Anheuser Busch for twenty five years. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing and spending time with his friends and family.
Griff is survived by his daughter, Holly Deleon and her husband, Chuck Deleon, his son, Brad Griffis and daughter, Ashley Griffis, his grandson, Greg Gestes, granddaughter, Lexi Gestes, his sister-in-law, Sue Griffis, his nephew, Bob Griffis, and neice, Gale Griffis.
Griff was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Griffis, his mother, Thelma Arnold Griffis and his Brother, Bob Griffis.
