Lifelong Sherman County, Kansas resident Arbutus Topliff, 87, died Thursday, October 2, 2014, at Goodland Regional Medical Center in Goodland, Kansas.

She was born June 3, 1927, at Elmo, Kansas, the daughter of Alice Suzan (Leckron) and Albert Martin “Dick” Dautel. In 1931, the family moved to Sherman County, where they made their home southwest of Goodland. She graduated with the class of 1945 from Edson High School in Edson, Kansas, and then earned her teaching certificate from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

On November 27, 1949, she and Ralph Edward Topliff were married at the Methodist Church in Goodland. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Women’s Circle 4; Lincoln Larks EHU, in which she was a charter member, enjoying membership for sixty-five years; VFW Auxiliary; and Elks Women, in which she was a life member.

Preceding her in death were her husband Ralph Topliff, who died November 14, 1999; her parents; two brothers Kenneth Dautel and Charles Dautel; and two sisters Virginia “Tootie” Chatfield and Ruth Berringer.

Surviving family includes her two daughters Cinda Hatcher and her husband Bryan of Goodland; Becky Hicks and her husband Mike of Loveland, Colorado; four grandchildren Mandy Parrish and her husband Timothy of Olathe; Wesley Hatcher and his wife Katie of Aurora, Colorado; Charlie Hicks of Loveland, Colorado; Amber Hicks of Las Vegas, Nevada; five great-grandchildren Taylan and Alyix Parrish; and Nolan, Lexten, and Colten Hatcher; sisters Alberta Tagtmeyer and her husband Hank of Siebert, Colorado; Betty Ann Nondorf of McCook, Nebraska; sister-in-law Merna Dautel of Goodland; and brother-in-law Dean Topliff and his wife Myrna of Goodland.

The memorial service will be Monday, October 6, at 10:00 AM MT, at First United Methodist Church in Goodland, with Reverend Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Goodland Cemetery.

Friends may share their respects on Sunday, from 4:00 until 7:00 PM MT, with family receiving friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM MT, at Koons Chapel in Goodland.

Memorials may be designated to the Arbutus Topliff Memorial, and may be left at or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS 67735-1555.
