Chloe Curtis was the daughter of Capt. Allin (also spelled Allen/Allyn) Curtis and Ruth Stiles (Torrington). Chloe was born in Woodbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut. When she was young, her parents moved to Alford, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. There, she met and married Lt. John Adams (aka Dea. John Adams), son of Dr. John Adams Jr., and Mary Parke.

In the marriage record of Allin Curtis to Ruth Stiles of Torrington, the record shows her birth name (Ruth Stiles) followed by "Torrington" as the town's method of stating her place of birth. This has caused much confusion and makes it appear as if Torrington was her last name. Most genealogies list her as Ruth (Stiles) Torrington or just Ruth Torrington instead of Ruth Stiles.

(Note: many records and genealogies on the internet mistakenly list Chloe Adams, wife of Lt. John Adams, as Chloe Rose daughter of Jacob Rose and Ann Dudley, but this is in error and there is an effort going on to get this corrected as the error has proliferated throughout tens of thousands of genealogies and found their way into modern day records that have taken bad information from those mistaken genealogies. See detailed explanation below).

Dea. John Adams and Chloe (Curtis) Adams had at least 11 children:

1 - Jonathan Adams (1757-1811) m. Abigail Sperry
2 - John Adams IV (1760-1849) m. Aner Hickok/Hickox
3 - William Adams (1762-1821) m. Lucinda Hickok/Hickox
4 - Chloe Adams (1764-?) m. Ephraim Rew
5 - Sarah "Sally" Adams (1766-?) m. Rufus Wilcox (son of Capt. Sylvanus Wilcox and Chestina Curtis)
6 - Mary "Polly" Adams (1768-1843) m. Amos Lusk
7 - Ruth Adams (1770-?) m. John Keyes
8 - Abner Adams (1772-1847) m. Hannah Rowley
9 - Joseph Adams (1775-1830 or 1839) m. Eunice (lnu)
10 - Lucy Adams (1777-?) m1. Lorin Hull m2. Josiah Benjamin
11 - Huldah Adams (1780-1860) m. Silas Eggleston
12 - a couple other names surface that might be the children of John Adams and Chloe Curtis, but could also be grandchildren or related in other ways. They include Hannah Adams b. abt 1780 and Darius Adams. The Hannah Adams found in some documents could also be Hannah Rowley, wife of Abner Adams. Extensive research fails to make a clear connection.

Correction to the mistaken origin of Chloe, wife of Lt. John Adams wrongly stated as Chloe Rose:

(Note: many genealogies on the internet state that Chloe (Mrs. John Adams) was born Chloe Rose, but that has been proven to be incorrect.

The mistaken Chloe Rose in question, was the daughter of Jacob Rose and Anne Dudley and it is well documented that she married Elizur Burnham and had at least three children with him [for more information please see "The Burnham Family"; or, "Genealogical Records of the Descendants of the Four Emigrants of the Name, who were among the early settlers in America", By Roderick Henry BURNHAM].

One can also check ["Connecticut Vital Records - Wethersfield Births, Marriages, Deaths 1634-1868" - the Barbour Collection, Connecticut State Library 1927] to find the marriage record of Chloe Rose (d/o Jacob Rose and Anne Dudley) to Elizur Burnham.

The mistake that Chloe Rose was the wife of John Adams can be traced to a couple sentences taken from the "History of the Pioneer Settlement of Phelps and Gorham's Purchase", by O. Turner on page 187, describing the settling of Bloomfield, which states:

"Deacon John Adams became the pioneer in settlement; and the patriarch it might well be added, for he introduced a large household into the wilderness. His family consisted of himself and wife, his sons John, Jonathan, William, Abner and Joseph; his sons in laws Ephraim Rew, Loren Hull, and (unnamed) Wilcox and their wives, and Elijah Rose, a brother-in-law and his family, and three unmarried daughters...in 1789.".

Previous applications assumed this meant that John Adams married a sister of Elijah Rose, named Chloe. And of course, research shows that there was such a person as Chloe Rose at the time and people quickly connected the dots without doing further research.

However; in the book, "Pioneers of Mendon, New York: early history of the town and its settlers" compiled by Anah B. Yates, states that: "Elijah Rose settled East Bloomfield in 1789. He married a sister of Mrs. Jonathan Adams."

This would mean that John Adams and Elijah Rose were brothers-in-law because their wives were sisters NOT because John Adams married Elijah's sister, which unfortunately, has been the conclusion of many amateur genealogists.

DAR Ancestor Elijah Rose #A097665 is listed as having wife, Anna Curtis. If Elijah Rose's wife's surname is Curtis and she is sister of John Adams' wife, then Chloe's surname is also Curtis. Elijah Rose's brother-in-law John Adams is also a DAR Ancestor #A000587 and states only that his wife's name was "Chloe", but does not include her maiden name, leading to even more confusion.

Also, "Woodbury, CT Vital Records" show the birth of the Curtis sisters:

"Chloe, d.o. Allen & Ruth Curtis b. July 31, 1739"
"Anna, d.o. Allen & Ruth Curtis, b. Mar. 24, 1748"

The marriages of Anna Curtis to Elijah Rose and Chloe Curtis to John Adams are also repeated in the book, "A family named Curtis: descendants of Thomas Curtis of Wethersfield, CT., 1598-1982", Compiled by Rose Mary Goodwin, published by R.M. Goodwin, 1983 Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison

The 1739 date of birth for Chloe Curtis also matches the date of birth based on her age at death. If Mrs. Chloe Adams was originally Chloe Rose, her age at death would off by 7 years. Although it is not uncommon that the birth year is sometimes off when based on "age at death", it is still usually within a year or two and is rarely off by more than a couple years. To be off by 7 years does not make a lot of sense.

Additionally, Chloe (Curtis) Adams' mother-in-law was Chestina Curtis. Chloe's future husband John Adams lived in Alford as did Sylvanus Wilcox and Chestina Curtis. Chestina was a cousin of Chloe's father Allin Curtis and the families undoubtedly knew each other and most assuredly had some contact.

The only reasonable conclusion one can come to, is that the wife of Dea. John Adams was Chloe Curtis, born Woodbury, CT on 31 July 1739, the daughter of Allin and Ruth Curtis).

Credit must be given to Peggy Durack for her extensive research on the true origin of John Adams' wife Chloe. Peggy is a descendant of Chloe (Curtis) Adams through Huldah (Adams) Eggleston of this memorial.
