Cocoa and chocolate manufacturer and philanthropist. The son of a Quaker, he first joined his father in the grocery buisness, then went into partnership with his brother Henry in a cocoa-making firm they had acquired. Joseph took care to avoid the expense of labour troubles and their wasteful disruptions of production by paying top wages for resonable hours and providing employees with good working conditions. His social work marked him as a foremost phlanthropist of the day, "of gentle ways and strong convictions." He was a supporter of the Liberal Party and was anxious to improve the quality of life for his employees. He provided them with a library, free education, a social welfare officer, a doctor, a dentist and a pension fund. He strongly supported the Leauge of Nations and Society of Friends
