ROBERT P BURNS

Robert P Burns, 82, well known and highly respected resident of Riverhead, died at his home 425 East Second street early Tuesday morning Aug 19. He had been about as usual up until he was stricken with a heart attack on Monday afternoon.

Mr Burns was a son of the late Patrick and Margaret (Gallagher) Burns. He was born in Cutchogue and resided there until about 30 years ago when he moved to Riverhead. For many years he operated a farm at Mattituck. In 1917 he was appointed a Deputy Sheriff of Suffolk County and served very efficiently in that capacity continuously until about 11 years ago when he retired. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Council K of C of Riverhead and the Holy Name Society of St John the Evangelist Church, Riverhead, and a former member of the Suffolk County Police Association.

Mr Burn's wife Mrs Mary Garvey Burns, died on Oct 13, 1946. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Dorothy J Burns of Riverhead, who is chief clerk of the Suffolk County Motor Vehicle Bureau and Mrs John A Britting of East Farmingdale, wife of Deputy County Treasurer Britting of Suffolk County, and a brother Joseph M Burns and also a sister Mrs Margaret Hand, both of Cutchogue.

Funeral services were held this (Thursday) morning with a solemn requiem Mass in St John the Evangelist Church at 9:30 o'clock. The ministers of the Mass were the Rev Russell Garvey of Brooklyn, a relative of the deceased, the Rev Walter Missback of the Sacred Heart Church, Glendale, and the Rev Charles Mulrooney of Cathedral College, Brooklyn. Interment was in the family plot in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cutchogue. Reginald H Tuthill had charge of the funeral arrangements.
