Sophia Elways was born in England, and emigrated with her parents to the United States in 1843, according to the Federal Census of 1900. Her family surname was also spelled: Elwes, Elwess, Elwis, etc.

She married William H. Johnson in 1863. He was one of over 700 people who lost their lives on the ship "Monarch of the Sea", when it sank sometime after leaving Liverpool, England in March 1866.

Their son:

1. William Edward Johnson (b April 1864, d after 1914).

After the death of her first husband, William H. Johnson in 1866, Sophia married Henry W. Martin on 19 March 1873 in New York.

Their children:

1. Sarah E. Martin (1873-1924)
2. Charles Martin (b 1876, d after 1930)
3. Emma Jane Martin (b 16 Oct 1878, d after 1910)
4. Ralph Frederick Martin (b 30 Aug 1883, d after 1930)

When Henry W. Martin died at age 47 in 1885, Sophia received a widow's pension, for his U.S. Navy military service during the Civil War, from the 1890s up until she died in 1919.

Sophia Martin and her children resided on East 26th Street, in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York, according to the Federal Census of 1900.

Sophia Martin and her children resided in Hempstead, Nassau Co., New York, according to the Federal Census of 1910.

Sophia Martin had resided at 203 Central Avenue in Cedarhurst, New York during the latter years of her life. Her husband, Henry W. Martin, had died in 1885, which was 34 years prior to her passing in 1919. Henry is buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. Sophia is buried at Lawrence Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery, earlier known as McKendree's Chapel. This church was a few blocks from where she had resided in Cedarhurst during the 1910's decade.
