Grant King, 67, had owned, built cars for 500-Mile Race

Services for Grant King, 67, Danville, former Indianapolis 500 car owner and builder, will be at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 22 in Danville Friends Meeting Church, Danville, with calling there from 9 a.m. Calling also will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21 in Conkle Funeral Home, Speedway Chapel. Burial will be in Hadley (Ind.) Friends Cemetery.

He died Dec. 17.

Mr. King owned or served as a chief mechanic or car builder on dozens of cars at the 500-Mile Race from 1964 to the early 1980s. He owned and operated Grant King Racing, which he opened in the 1970s. He produced championship cars for other teams while supervising his own team. In 1975, drivers for King included Bob Harkey, Sheldon Kinser and John Martin. Other drivers included Tom Sneva and Gary Bettenhausen.

Mr. King also built sprint cars, and his drivers won several U.S. Auto Club sprint championships.

He was a member of Ancient Landmarks Masonic Lodge 319, Scottish Rite, 500 Oldtimers Club and the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

Survivors: wife Janet Sue Skirvin King; children Jaunita Huisentruit, Tony Carter; parents Toy and Young Chee King; sisters Frita, Victoria King, Ann Edington, Mary Lo; brothers Johnny, Eddie, Leonard, George King; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild.
