Mr. Gier was a retired farmer, former Ransom Township supervisor and former director and commissioner of the Hillsdale County Welfare Board.
He was born in Ransom Township Sept. 27, 1896, to Charles and Edna (Weatherwax) Gier and spent his entire life in Hillsdale County.
On June 30, 1917, he was married to the former Gertrude White who survives.
Also surviving are twin daughters, Wanda and Lila Gier of Morenci; sons James J. Jr., Blaine and Audrey D., all of Camden, and Bliss, Osseo; a sister, Mrs. Orville (Myrtle) Waters, Osseo; one brother, Lawrence, Rt. 1, Osseo; 14 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
One sister preceded Mr. Gier in death.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Ryan officiating.
Burial is to be in Evergreen Cemetery, Ransom.
