Mrs. Frederick Fletcher, whose serious illness was chronicled last week, died on Thursday, March 16.
Mrs. Fletcher received a paralytic shock on Sunday, March 12, from which she never fully recovered.
Mrs. Beulah Chittenden Fletcher
was the grand-daughter of Gov. Thomas Chittenden, Vermont's first governor. Her father was Truman Chittenden, the youngest son of the old governor. Her mother
was Lucy Jones, a member of the Jones family of Richmond, well known throughout the state in its early times.
She was born in Williston, May 20, 1816, at the old Chittenden homestead now standing on the banks of the Winooski. Truman Chittenden was in his day one of the
best known men in Chittenden county. He was a farmer, but held many public offices. For over 30 years he was justice of the peace, He was
judge of probate 11 years, county judge seven years, state councilor 12 years, town representative four years, and for over 26 years a member of the corporation of the University of Vermont.
Beulah Chittenden was married to Col. Frederick Fletcher at Williston, Jan. 14, 1836. They first resided at Jericho where Col, Fletcher was in business. Residing for a time in
Underhill, Burlington and Shelburne, in 1869 they came to St. Johnsbury to live.
Mrs. Fletcher was the mother of two sons, Col. Fayette, who was born in Jericho in 1839 and died at Minneapolis, Feb. 19, 1890, and Col. Truman C. Fletcher of this place.
Among the few remaining representatives of the Chittenden family are Hon. Lucius E. Chittenden of New York, Col. E. A. Chittenden of St. Albans, Mrs. Mary J. Viele of
Pittsburgh, N. Y., Mrs. A. M. Bates of Rutland, Mrs. C. A. Murray of Burlington and Mrs Dr. Bingham of
Williston. Her sister, Mrs. Wm Whiteman, of Winooski, lies at the point of death.
Among the relatives present at the funeral were Mrs. C. A. Murray of Burlington, Mrs. Yiele of Plattsburgh, Col. Albert A. Fletcher of Middlebury and Hon. Martin F.(unreadable) of North Ferrisburgh.
Mrs. Fletcher was a lady highly esteemed and beloved by a large circle of friends. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, conducted
by Rev. Frank Appleton. Among the floral offerings was one from friends in St. Andrew's church with the inscription, "A tribute of love and respect to a life crowned with the victorious laurels of true womanhood"
