Dora was murdered in her home, along with her caretaker, by Louis Crumpton. Crumpton pleaded guilty to the murders and was jailed 4 months later. He died of AIDS in prison in 2002.
Dora was the mother of Charlie Birnbaum, pianist. Her other son, Sam committed suicide in Australia in 1986, where he was teaching piano.
