Dora was born in Slonim, a city in Poland. She was a Holocaust survivor. Her 4 year old daughter was shot by the Nazis. Her husband was caught and hanged in the town square. No one in her family survived; not her parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, or cousins. She was the only one left.

She met her second husband, Abe, in the woods while hiding from the Nazis. His wife had been arrested and shot. Abe and Dora married and had their first son. Their second son was born in a displaced persons camp.

They left the camp and moved to San Francisco in 1952, then Philadelphia, then eventually Atlantic City.

Dora was murdered in her home, along with her caretaker, by Louis Crumpton. Crumpton pleaded guilty to the murders and was jailed 4 months later. He died of AIDS in prison in 2002.

Dora was the mother of Charlie Birnbaum, pianist. Her other son, Sam committed suicide in Australia in 1986, where he was teaching piano.
