Mrs. Bott's father (Nelson Bennett) was born in Cass county, Indiana, on his father's farm, and was but twenty years of age when he enlisted in Company E, Twenty-Ninth
Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He served from September 12, 1861, to May II, 1864, when he was granted an honorable discharge, at Chattanooga, and the same day he re-enlisted, and remained stanchly at his post of duty, until he was finally discharged at Marietta, Georgia, several months after the close of the war, the date of his retirement from the army being December 2, 1865. He enlisted at first as a private soldier, and by gallantry and fidelity to duty rose to be corporal, then sergeant, then first lieutenant,
