EMORY STEELE
Born in Hounsfield, August 3, 1846;
Died in Lowville, March 19, 1928
Following an illness of several months, Emory Steele died Monday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B. Bray ton Johnson,, Easton street. Mr. Steele was-born in Hounsfield, Jefferson county, August 3, 1846 the son of Reuben and Julia Boynton Steele, and when 18 years of age enlisted at Sacket Harbor In Ine One Hundred Eighty-Sixth Infantry for service in the south. He saw considerable action during the war and was in the battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Steele's marriage to Alma Farr, of Clayton, took place 54 years ago. His wife died ten years ago.
For many years the deceased took an active part in G. A R. affairs and during his 40 years residence here was widely known in the ranks of Civil War veterans. For five years he was commander of G. D. Bailey Post of Lowville. Mr. Steele was for many years a member of the local Methodist Episcopal church.
Besides his daughter, he leaves two sons, Herbert R. of this village, and Newell E. of Richmond, Va., and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ketcham, of Adams. Funeral services will be held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. B. Brayton Johnson this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Edward J. Lavis officiating. Interment will be in Rural cemetery. The bearers will be members of Lowville Post 162, American. Legion, and the post will furnish a firing squad.
