He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as finance manager after more than 40 years of service. Curtiss was a graduate of Hampton High School, Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, and Thomas Nelson Community College. He earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Christopher Newport University.
He was a husband, father, brother, friend, sounding board, influence, teacher, leader, provider, peacemaker, and much more. He was a man of integrity and wisdom, who loved the Lord, and mentored and served others.
Curtiss was preceded in death by his parents, William and Belvia Back, and his brothers, Elmer, Buford, Odell, Hilmer, Forrest(48794604) and Ralph.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bonnie Keel Back; daughter, Kay Helm; sons, David Back (Tami) and Chris Back (Becky); his brothers, Bernie Back (Linda), Don Back (Johnnie), Milton Back (Atlas), and Darrell Back (Sandra); grandchildren Zachary Helm, Talyor Helm, Conner Back, Alissa Back and Everly Back, as well as many devoted friends.
A memorial service, led by Rev. Don Back, will be held on Tuesday, October 28, at Peninsula Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at Parklawn Memorial Park in Hampton.
