Lelah Puckachee was the subject of controversy in 1899, when she ran away from the Indian boarding school and the Indian agent was trying to force her to return. She was 18 years old and quickly married to TaTaChiPa, a widower with small children.

Lelah won the judgment that she would not be forced to attend the boarding school. At that age and younger, women married. She and her husband sought 10,000 dollars damages and before this came to trial, Lelah passed away, dead of Small Pox early in November, 1901.
