In the 1880 census George about 14 years old and going to school. He was living with his Mother and Father who was a carpenter at Tuscola, Douglas, Illinois. His 3 living sibling were at home.
Some time before the 1900 census was enumerated, George's father passed away. He was probably buried in a Cemetery near his home in Tuscola, Douglas, Illinois.
The 1900 census reveal that George married in 1895. In Dec. of 1895 George had became the husband of Rebecca Evelyn Culbertson. From this marriage the following known children were born: Tucker Philip Smith 1896 – 1951; Gertrude Elizabeth Smith 1898 – 1979; Margaret Nancy Smith 1900 – 1908; Vinal Stewart Smith 1903 – 1956; Phoebe Fay Smith 1905 – 1941; Leslie Lyndley Smith 1908 - 1961; Clayton Albert Smith 1910 – 1986 and Earl Wesley Smith 1914 – 1981.
The 1900 census also revealed that George and Rebecca were living at 106 1/2 East Elm Street in Urbana, Champaign, Illinois. Their first 2 children had been born and George was was working in the building trade as a painter.
In the 1910 census George and Rebecca had built a home at 707 Smith View Drive, and they still had a mortgage to pay off. George was still in the building trade, working as a carpenter. Rebecca had given birth to 7 children in their 14 years of marriage, and 6 of them were living.
Family sources and a copy of his Tombstone attest to the fact that he died on July 13 1915 in Urbana, Champaign, Illinois, USA, he was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana, Champaign County,Illinois. In 1956 his wife, Rebecca, was buried beside him. (bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
