This decedent was the daughter of James & Mary Burgess. This marker for her parents in Evergreen Cemetery also provides her date of death and age, and refers to her as "Wife of John Beall."

One family tree reported that this Abagill Burgess had been married to John C. Beall before Chester Ricker. A transcription of a marriage record in IA Select marriages, reflected a marriage of Chester Ricker and "Abagail Beals" in Waukon on March 26, 1873, but did not reveal the given name of Abagill's former husband.

John C. Beall, son of Alexander Beall & Margaret "Peggy" Barnes, interred in this Evergreen Cemetery, matches the profile. John & Abagill appear to have married c. 1869 and divorced in 1872. Abbie married Chester Ricker on March 26, 1873. They divorced c. 1878 and Abbie married John Asher on August 14, 1879. John C. Beall married second wife, Mary Elizabeth White in 1883; they divorced before his death in 1888.

CHILDREN:
Abbie Burgess Beall had three children, the elder 2 with John Beall, the youngest with Chester Ricker:

Charles H. Beall
December 1869—after 1900 U.S. census
(dates orig shown here belong to a different Chas. H. Beall in Indiana)
[On February 28, 1899, Charles Beall married Edith Stillions, twin sister of Edward Stillions who married the divorced second wife of John C. Beall (stepmother of Charles), Mary Elizabeth White Beall Barnes Stillions. The photograph of the IA marriage records of Edith Stillions and Charles Beall confirms the names of his parents as John Beall & A. Burgess. Edith appears to have died soon after their marriage. Charles was recorded as "widowed" in 1900 U.S. census).]

Charlotte "Lottie" Kijia [Beall] Ricker Wilkie
December 17, 1871—April 1, 1925
(birth date consistent in death cert., marker, and 1900 U.S. census)
Memorial # 67807867
Chester Ricker was reported as "father" for Charlotte in public records, including marriage & death cert.

John Chester Ricker
November 7, 1876—November 9, 1967
Memorial # 47302433
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The multiple marriages in fairly rapid succession temporarily scattered Abbie's children.
John Ricker, was in household of mother & stepfather:

1880 U.S. census, Franklin, Allamakee County, IA
John Asher 62, Abigal Asher 33, John Ricker 3.

Charles Beall, 11, is reported as "adopted son," in 1880 household of Charles H. Burgess 68 and Barbary Burgess 75.

Charlotte 9 has not yet been located in 1880 census, but was reunited with her brother Charles, in 1885 in the following household:

1885 IA census, Jefferson Township, Allamakee County, IA
George W. Beall 37, Clara A. [Davis] Beall 31, William Beall 11, Frankie Beall 9, Irving Beall 4, Delia Beall 3, Grant Beall 1, Charles H. Beall 16, Lottie K. Ricker 11 [sic, 14]—the last two children are children of John C. Beall & Abagill Burgess, living with the household of George Washington Beall (son of John Beall & Malynda Porter Beall per 1925 IA census of household of his daughter Jettie Beall Pederson).

John C. Beall married Mary E. White in 1883, divorced, and was apparently pursuing another widow when he died in 1888.

Abagill Burgess Beall, the subject of this memorial, died on April 11, 1887, at the age of
40 years, 9 months, 5 days, according to her marker, yielding a retro-calculation of birth date of July 6, 1846. One family tree reported her birth date as August 6, 1847, but no source reference was provided.

Another memorial for "Abigail Asher" appears in Rossville Cemetery with an unknown date of birth and a date of death of April 11, 1881. April 11 is consistent with the month and day of this decedent and the 1881 date is probably a typo of 1887, which supports the theory that these memorials were created for the same individual:
Abagill Burgess Beall Ricker Asher

Her marker here in Evergreen cemetery was clearly placed by the Burgess family because it contains the records of not only Abagill, but also of her brother, Albert, who died in 1865, their father, John Burgess, who died in 1869, and their mother, Mary Jenkins Burgess, the last of those named on the marker to die, in 1904. But the transcription of the marker of Abigail Asher in Rossville shows only her given and last married name, from her marriage to John Asher. It appears that she was buried in Rossville Cemetery under her married name Asher and later memorialized in a cenotaph on the marker of her parents in Evergreen.

On December 17, 1891, Bremer County, IA,
Abagill's daughter, Charlotte K. Ricker, married George B. Wilkie.
