John Cridge was born in 1790 in Chard near Taunton, Somerset (sources: memorial stone and family note). He was likely christened on March 17, 1791 in Thurlbear and the son of Thomas Cridge (a carpenter) and Sarah Channing. Thomas and Sarah were married on September 30, 1790 in Thurlbear.

John was a carpenter. He married Maria Beaton (daughter of William Beaton and Jane Burnell) on March 19, 1826 at the Parish Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Taunton, Somerset, England (The witnesses present were Matilda Beaton and John Beaton). The officiant was Rev. Henry Bower. The Cridges had two children named Edmund John (born on Sept. 1, 1828 in Taunton) and Alfred Henry (born in 1836 in New York). The family lived at Harmony Row (cottages built by Charles Harman on Tancred Street) in Taunton (the East Gate/East Reach area), Somerset, England. They then came over to New York from Bristol, England on "Ship Superb". The Cridges arrived on May 11, 1832 and settled in Troy, NY. John became a naturalized U.S. citizen in or before 1855 (1855 New York census). In 1860 he lived at Ninth near Jacob. In 1870 he was at 99 Ninth (rear house). John died on May 4, 1873 in Troy.

Notes:

1) John is listed as a former resident of Thurlbear in the New York Alien Residents, 1825-1848 (Records of aliens enabled to own real property).

2) John's wife and children are buried in the same family plot.

3) The above mentioned Matilda Beaton was likley John's sister-in-law, Mrs. Samuel Sully of Taunton. Samuel was a cordwainer and shoemaker on East street.
