Stella was born prematurely in Redford, Michigan, to Ella Robbins Spicer and Leonard Denford Spicer. To help keep her warm during the cold Michigan winters, they kept her tucked in a shoebox and placed this behind the woodstove. She survived, and went on to outlive all of her immediate family. As a young woman, she was active in the womens' movement, and became a suffragette. Never finding the right partner, and without financial resources to further her education, she went to work as a child care provider. She did this until she was well into her eighties. She also continued to date while in her eighties. Stella cared for her parents in their old age. She was interested in history, baseball, and genealogy. She was someone who always appeared upbeat, and grateful for all that she had, which, monetarily, was very little. She suffered a hip fracture while in her late 90's, which resulted in a decline in her health.
