SUICIDE
A man by the name of David Miller, living in the southeast part of town, took his life on last Thursday morning, about 7 o'clock, by strangling. He arose early and after looking about the yard for awhile and eating a light breakfast, he went up the stairs, as his daughter thought, to lie down, as he had not been well.
In a short time she started up the stairs to inquire how he was feeling and on nearing the stairway she was horrified on discovering the lifeless body of her father suspended in the stairway by a rope around his neck.
She immediately informed her mother and other members of the family of what she saw. In a short time the neighbors had learned of the awful tragedy and a large crowd was soon on the scene. The coroner was summoned and the verdict of the jury was that he came to his death by strangulation.
He was 68 years old, had been in poor health and poor circumstances for a number of years, and had been the father of seventeen children, most of whom are living.
The funeral services were conducted at the home of the family at 9 o'clock and the remains interred in the Newbern cemetery near where the family lived before moving to Chariton this spring.
We understand that several previous attempts had been made by Mr. Miller to take his life but he had been prevented by being found in the attempt.
