John was the 6th child of Francis Keyes and Mary Meek. In 1830 the family moved from Virginia to Ray County Missouri. In 1832 John served in the Black Hawk War. On April 14, 1836 he married Mary "Polly" Ann Wollard and in 1876 the family left Missouri and entered Kansas with a team and two wagons. He and son John Francis staked their homestead on the Pratt/Barber county line near the head waters of North Elm creek. They were the second non-native settlers in the area. To make a living John and son gathered buffalo bones and skins and took them to Hutchinson Kansas where they were shipped East. Later they farmed and had over 600 head of cattle. John and Mary had 13 children ten to adult.
