BETTS, A. Raymond, Jr.

A. Raymond Betts, Jr., 86, of Southwick, MA, formerly of Granby beloved husband of Marjorie Willgoos Betts ''Jerrie'' died Wednesday, (September 22, 2004) at Noble Hospital, Westfield, MA. Born in Norwalk, son of the late A. Raymond Betts and Gladys (Sanger) Betts, he graduated from Westminster School in Simsbury and attended the University of Vermont. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army and was on the first Troop Ship to leave the U.S. for the South Pacific Theater, and served there until 1945. Ray was employed as Comptroller of Sage Allen and Co. and retired in 1979 from the Accounting Department at the M.D.C. He served on the original committee that developed the zoning plan for Granby, served on the Zoning Boards for over 30 years, and was Secretary of the Zoning Board of Appeals for 15 years. He was past President of the Granby Land Trust and instrumental in the purchase and preservation of the Granby Oak. Ray was past Treasurer of the Salmon Brook Historical Society, SLOCO, and the Granby Tennis Club. He was past Chairman of the Boy Scouts Troop #125, a driver for the Senior Van and The Granby Drummer. A member of the Limestone Trout Club, fishing and the outdoors were his second love to his first love, his wife ''Jerrie''. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Peter Raymond Betts and his wife, Amy of Norwich, VT; four grandchildren, Mariah and Evan Betts, Aaron and Jen Pangburn; a brother, Morgan Betts and his wife, Alice of Avon; a sister-in-law, Alice Ferguson of Denver, CO. He was predeceased by a brother, Elliot S. Betts. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. at the South Congregational Church, 242 Salmon Brook St., Granby. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Granby Land Trust, P.O. Box 23, Granby, CT 06035 or to a charity of the donors choice. Hayes-Huling and Carmon Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
