Margaret Van Gorden or Van Garten is believed to have been born in New York or New Jersey abt. 1767-1769 and died in Jackson Co., Ohio after the 1830 census (where she appears with her husband, Mordecai Dunham, in the Bloomfield Twp. Census) and before the 1840 census when Mordecai appears as the only elderly adult in the household in Milton Twp., Jackson Co., Ohio.
In about 1792 she married Mordecai Dunham. The marriage is believed to have taken place in Pennsylvania or Virginia.
Mordecai Dunnum [sic] or Dunham, begins appearing in the Monongalia, Virginia, Personal Property Tax Lists in 1794. He and his brother, Gideon Dunham appear in 1795 and continue appearing in Monongalia through 1797. This is the Northeastern part of the county, in what is now Preston Co., east of Cheat River. Neither Stephen, Gideon or Mordecai ever appear in the western district lists of Monongalia. A Stephen Dunham then appears in 1798, 1800 and 1801 in Monongalia Co., but Mordecai and Gideon have moved on (probably to Fayette Co., PA). The 1801 list is the last one which includes a Dunham.
Amos Spencer (husband of Rebecca Dunham) begins appearing in the Tax Lists in 1796 and continues through 1807.
Margaret's husband, Mordecai Dunham, Sr., was in Georges Twp., Fayette Co., PA Census in 1800 and 1810. He, his wife and family lived in Jackson County, Ohio as early as 1830 census, are listed again in 1840 without his wife, and he died in April 1850 in District 10, Jackson County, Ohio, according to the 1850 Mortality List.
