First Constitutional President of Argentina. He served from 1826 to 1827, under the constitution approved on December 1826. Due to the failure of this attempt to reorganize the country, he resigned on June 1827, retiring definitively from the political arena. In 1829 he left the country going first to Colonia, Uruguay, then to Brazil and finally to Cádiz, Spain, where he died in 1845. Though he had asked that his body "never ever be returned" to Argentina his remains were repatriated in 1857 and interred in the Cementerio de la Recoleta. In 1932 they were moved to a mausoleum built in his honor in Plaza Miserere (Miserere Square), in Buenos Aires.
