HOWARD V. CHERNEY

Howard V. Cherney, age 98, a Manitowoc resident, died Monday, November 25, 2013 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, formally a resident of Laurel Grove Assisted Living for 10 years.
Howard was born on August 28, 1915 on a farm in the town of Manitowoc Rapids, son of the late Vincent and Adelaide (Bonin) Cherney. At the age of five, he spent 6 months in Sacramento, California with his parents. They returned to the city of Manitowoc for a short time before settling on a farm south of Branch. Howard graduated from Branch Grade School and attended Lincoln High School. In his youth, he worked at the cheese factory in Northeim.
Later he took over the home farm. He married Marie D. Herrmann on October 6, 1945 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek. They farmed in Reifs Mills and Howard worked winters at Manitowoc Shipbuilding and at Brillion Iron Works. In 1955 they moved to Francis Creek and Howard worked at Manitowoc Engineering in the material handling department as overhead crane operator, leader, and foreman for 22 years and retired in 1977. Howard was a former member of Boilermakers Union #443 and a retired member of the Machinist Union Local #516. Just prior to retirement, Howard and Marie would vacation in Spring and in Fall at Lake Nelson near Hayward, walleye fishing for over 30 years. In 1987 they moved to Manitowoc.
Surviving are his son: Wayne Cherney, Manitowoc; his daughter: Nancy Wojciechowski, Green Bay; and three grandchildren:a sister-in-law: Dorothy Cherney, Surprise, Arizona. Other relatives and friends survive.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents: Vincent and Adelaide Cherney; his wife Marie on March 14, 2006; a brother and sister-in-law: Earl and Lucille Cherney; a brother: Allan; a sister and brother-in-law: Gladys and Fred Steinbrecker; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Ervin and Gladys Reindl; and a brother-in-law: Lester Herrmann.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo - 1121 North 14th Street, Manitowoc.
Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Dave Pleier with entombment at Calvary Mausoleum, Manitowoc, at a later date.
The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 9:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 until 11:15 a.m.
