Son of James Bigger and Eveline HAMILL, he served in Civil War, Union, August 10, 1861 to July 27, 1865, Private Company F, 34th Infantry; Second Lieutenant, Company E, 36th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

He was married to Mary B. DAVIS, and they appear on the 1910 census, Edgewood, Allegheny, PA, where Matthew is agent for gas company. This record indicates she had 1 child, none living.
