Germaine was born on January 26, 1934 to Joseph and Louise Bleuzen in the bucolic village of St. Goazec, located in the Brittany region of France. Her early childhood was filled with wonderful memories of family and friends, and the restaurant her parents ran. That all changed in 1940 with the German invasion and occupation of France in World War II. Germaine's father was instrumental in the local French Resistance working with British agents infiltrating behind enemy lines. Unfortunately, he was captured in 1943 but did return home at the end of the war, and passed shortly thereafter. Germaine was 11 years old when she lost her father. Afterwards, she attended summer camps for children that had lost parents in the war, and was the light and the joy to the other children as she would sing the songs (some in other languages) that she learned there. Germaine never forgot these songs and her beautiful blue eyes would light up as she sang and clapped the same songs to her children and grandchildren.
It is often said that surviving adversity makes one stronger. This was certainly true about Germaine, but what stands apart is how positive and full of spirit she was. She was also very brave. At the age of 17, she and a cousin came to the United States via boat to find work and a better future. She did so working various jobs in and around New York City. A few years later she met the love of her life, Joe. This past February, they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. She was a wonderful wife, mother of five children, and grandmother of eight grandchildren.
Having a large family and a husband who was an international airline pilot meant that Germaine had a lot of responsibility to run a busy household. Her energy level was unparalleled, and her warm, loving nature was an inspiration to her children and anyone who ever crossed her path. She was the most selfless person you could ever meet. She gave so much love, and never expected anything in return. Germaine was a woman of deep faith and has often been described as an angel on Earth. She will be missed, yet remembered in so many ways.
Mother of Ann, Evelyn, Liz, Joe, & John. Cherished grandmother of John Tyler, Amanda, Michelle, Rachel, Rebecca, Leigh, Matthew, and Richard. Dear sister of Therese Salaun and Louis Bleuzen.
Services held at R. Stutzmann & Son, New Hyde Park, NY. Funeral Mass at Notre Dame RC Church, New Hyde Park, NY. Interment at Calverton National Cemetery.
