YORK SPRINGS Laura Leone Hershey, 88, died peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2014, in the comforts of her home.
Laura was born on June 19, 1926, in Mechanicsburg, the daughter of Clarence Leroy Shambaugh and Abigail Lockwood Shambaugh.
Laura thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. Her love for the outdoors began at an early age on her parent's farm. She learned to ride horses and manage them throughout her early years. She worked at the Mechanicsburg National Bank, and co-managed a restaurant and apartments in Mechanicsburg. In 1949, Laura married the love of her life, Quincy Baird Hershey, Sr. who was stationed at the Naval Yard in Mechanicsburg. Shortly after, they moved to his family's property in York Springs, her employment included office secretary in the Bermudian Springs School System, managing their family's fur business - Hershey's Fur Center, in addition to raising their three children. She was a board member of the Susquehanna Valley Rhododendron Society, area coordinator of the Girl Scouts, member of Morning Hour Chapel Brethren in Christ Church, York Springs Historical Society, Gettysburg Audubon Society, and York Rose Society. She also served as volunteer for the American Red Cross during WWII. In 1964, Laura and Baird, along with their children, transformed their property into a well-loved campground, which hosted guests for 50 years.
Laura is survived by her sisters, Margie Nita Spahr (late husband Gene) of Mechanicsburg, and Jane Lockwood Funk (husband Dave) of Chambersburg; and her brother, Jack Leroy Shambaugh (wife Joan) of Mechanicsburg. She also leaves behind her children, Bonnie Jane Search (husband John) of Mechanicsville, Va., Clara Lockwood Schweiger (husband Larry) of Pittsburgh, and her son, Quincy Baird Hershey, Jr. (wife Sharon) of York Springs. She also leaves behind her numerous grandchildren, Della Schweiger (husband Jared Schultheis), Carolyn Schweiger, Joshua Hershey (wife Jessica), Lauren Schweiger (husband Sheldon van Deventer), Philip Search, Benjamin Hershey (Erika), Rebecca Search, Andrew Hershey (wife Annette), and Rachel Search; and her loving great-grandchildren, Elviss Schweiger - van Deventer, Thadius Schultheis, Patrick Schultheis, Sutton Schweiger, Lisseth Hershey, Maclean Schweiger, Natalie Hershey, and Elliot Hershey.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 25, at the Morning Hour Chapel, 491 Germany Road, East Berlin. Viewing will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the Chapel. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ye Olde Sulphur Spa of York Springs Historical Society, P.O. Box 161, York Springs, PA 17372.
