He died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 at home.
Born Jan. 7, 1909 in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of the late Quincy Wright and Della Baird Hershey, he studied forestry at the Monte Alto campus of Penn State University.
A well-known naturalist, he studied taxidermy at Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh and later became state taxidermist at the Capital Annex Museum, Harrisburg. After leaving the state museum, he founded Hershey's Fur Center in York Springs.
His love of the outdoors led him into a working relationship with conservationist Gov. Gifford Pinchot. During the Depression, he worked for Allegheny County Parks Department, helping develop that county's North Park.
A veteran of the 104th Cavalry, he was employed at the Naval Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg during World War II.
He helped organize the Big Game Exhibit and was co-founder of what is now known as the Eastern Sports Outdoor Show. He became the first Boone and Crockett judge certified to measure big game animals in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Hershey attended Morning Hour Chapel, East Berlin.
He is survived by his wife, Laura; three daughters, Phyllis Geigley of Gettysburg, Bonnie Search of Mechanicsville, Va., and Clara Schweiger of Wexford; a son, Baird Hershey Jr. of York Springs; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Hershey Barriga.
