MANSFIELD: Mel E. Alexander, 67, of Hidden Oak Trail, Mansfield, died Tuesday evening July 8, 2003 in his home following an apparent heart attack.
He was born November 8, 1935 in Mansfield to James W. and Bertha Rose Alexander, and was graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1954. A lifelong Mansfield resident, Mel was raised in the Richland County Children’s Home on Hedges Street.
Mel served with the US Army during the Korean War, and was a member of AMVETS Post # 26.
He retired in 1991 as a supervisor with United Parcel Service, following 28 years of service.
Mel attended Berean Baptist Church and was a member of Mansfield Liederkranz.
An avid sports fan, who loved to talk, he often intertwined the two by combining stories with sports history. If ESPN wasn’t interesting, Mel was likely watching the Financial News Network.
Recently he spent winters at Sand Key Island, Florida, but always looked forward to returning to Mansfield to spend time with his family, and get back to his grandchildren’s ball games.
He is survived by his wife Beverly J. Smith Alexander, whom he married January 18, 1958; their children Jeff and Kathy Alexander of Mansfield, Joni and Rob Hassmann of Mansfield; Jim and Krista Alexander of Lexington, and Monya and Ken Graham of Lexington; ten grandchildren Steve and Mandy Alexander, Morgan, Abbey and Ryan Hassmann, Nick, Brody and Kyle Alexander, Alex and Brooke Graham; a step grandson Kenny Parker; a niece and nephew whom he raised Lisa Massey and Glen Massey both of Mansfield; brothers and sisters Fred and Jean Alexander of Clearwater, Florida, Jim and Sally Alexander of Willard, JoAnne and Pete Gaston of Mansfield, Betty and Harold Hinklin of Galion, Marilyn and Dewaine Shanklin of Massilon and Mary and Tom Seckerson of Columbus; three sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law Donna Parrella, Sylvia Smith and Shirley and Chuck Day all of Mansfield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday July 16, 2003 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. The worship service celebrating the life of Mel Alexander will be held Thursday at 11am in Berean Baptist Church 2145 Middle Bellville Road, with the Rev. David J. Pound officiating. Military honors by the Richland County Joint Veterans Council will immediately follow.
