He was the son of James M. Byrnside, Jr. of Monroe Co., WV and his wife Ann Caldwell Byrnside.

After his father died in late 1817 in St. Louis Co., MO, he and his younger sister Elizabeth had their somewhat older brother John appointed as their guardian when they moved with him to Franklin Co., MO:
