He operated a gas station in northeast Minneapolis in the 1940's and made an unsuccessful run for the Minneapolis City Council in 1949. In the early 1950's he opened Mady's Snack Shop on 13th Avenue NE. A few years later he sold it to his son Gene, and became manager of the Holy Cross Recreation Center, a bowling alley operated by Holy Cross parish in northeast Minneapolis. While there, he began campaigning for junior bowling in the Twin Cities. Mady organized corporate sponsorship of annual banquets for junior bowlers at the Prom Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1964 he purchased the Heights Bowling Center on Central Avenue in Columbia Heights, Minnesota and renamed it Mady's. Although he retired in 1975, he remained part owner of the business, and his son managed the center.
