Hays -- John F. Karlin, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Hays Medical Center. He was born Aug. 27, 1922, in Catherine to John J. and Mary (Schmidt) Karlin.

He married Rosemary T. Billinger in October 1944. She died Nov. 15, 1995.

He was a graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy in Hays. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service, was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Joseph Council of the Knights of Columbus, both in Hays.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen Shields, Hays; two sisters, Josephine Glassman and Virginia Hogan, both of Denver; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Karlin, and five sisters, Rose Stuckey, Martina Dreiling, Catherine Weigel, Mary Skolnick and Rita Zelinski.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, with Father Earl Befort officiating; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine. There will be a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., both Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Thomas More Prep-Marian High School or the church, both in Hays.
