Ruth Shepherd Dean, 93, of Fitzgerald, died Saturday, October 26, 2013, at her residence.

Funeral arrangements will be held 2 PM, Saturday, November 2, 2013, at West Side Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Cargle, the Rev. Robert McDearmid, and the Rev. Robert Chaudoin officiating. Interment will follow in Enigma Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Friday evening at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mamie Ruth Dean was born June 13, 1920, in Turner County, Georgia to the late Jessie Collier & Mary Lizzie Reeves Shepherd. She attended school in Mystic and received her nursing training at Ben Hill-Irwin Tech. Mrs. Dean lived across the United States during her husband’s military career and was an Air Force wife for over 50 years. She was a nurse for Dr. Cornwell as well as an LPN at Ben Hill County Hospital and Dorminy Medical Center. Mrs. Dean accepted Christ as her Savior at the former Kennedy Memorial Baptist Church and was a long-time member of West Side Baptist Church. She formerly taught Sunday school for over 35 years, was active in the WMU, served as G.A. director and was a member of the Friendship Sunday school class and the Ladies’ Fellowship. She enjoyed cooking and canning vegetables, gardening, and growing flowers. She sang with the Bernhardt singers and loved being with her family and going to church.

She is survived by her son: J. David Dean of Valdivia, Chile and a daughter: Nancy D. Streat of Fitzgerald; five grandchildren: Andi Bowen of Fitzgerald; Jesse Allen Streat of Augusta, Sgt. Kasey Dean Streat, USMC, Okinawa, Japan, Allen Nelson Dean of Suwanee, and Ashley Catherine Dean of Norcross; three great-grandchildren: Sam Bowen, Will Bowen, and Ben Bowen; and one sister: Thelma Barrentine of Enigma. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: TSgt John William Dean, USAF (Ret); three brothers: Jessie Shepherd, Paul Shepherd, and James Shepherd; and four sisters: Elizabeth Shepherd, Grace Newton, Christine Graham, and Doris Henderson.
