Funeral services for John Barnes, 97, of Gore will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, at the First Baptist Church in Tahlequah with the Rev. Adam Abel and Marty Woffard officiating.

Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery in Tahlequah under the direction of Agent & Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Mr. Barnes was born on July 19, 1917, in Cherokee County to Alec Barnes and Lizzie (Weatherford) Barnes. He died on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014, in Muskogee.

He worked in construction.

He married Walsie James in May 2001 in Gum Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Walsie Barnes; two daughters, Geneva Ray and Carla Duvall, both of Gore; seven sons, Orvil Barnes of Houston, Texas, Jimmie Barnes of Gore, Johnny Barnes Jr., and Tom Barnes, both of Gum Springs, David Barnes of Keys, Mike Barnes of Sallisaw, Robert Barnes of Chattanooga, seven stepsons, Mitchell, Bobby, Tommy, Chris, Jefferey, Johnny and Chuck Laymon; 24 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Nellie Barnes; one daughter, Carolyn Barnes; and one grandson.
