Artist. She is remembered as a Dutch illustrator. She was a member of the Amsterdamse Joffers, which was a group of about a dozen women artists, which included, besides herelf, Jacoba Surie, Maria Engelina van Regteren Altena, Therese Schwartze, and Betsy Westendorp-Osieck. In 1912, this group received the name of Amsterdamse Joffers by art critic, Albert Plasschaet. The group met weekly in the last quarter of the 19th century to share ideas, paint and have art shows. As the daughter of a wealthy merchant who collected art, she received her first drawing class at the Amsterdam Day School for Girls. Born Johanna Cornelia Hermanna Bodenheim, she studied under the Rijiksacademie voor Beeldende Kuunsten from 1893 to 1895 in Amsterdam and later Jan Veth. Her colleague, Therese Schwartze, painted her portrait. Generally in black and white silhouettes or color lithography, her illustrations can be found in 22 children's books. Besides illustrations for books and magazines, she designed patterns for dishes, textiles, posters, and book covers. One of her most-noted works are the silhouettes in the 1905 book “Women Painters of the World.” Recently, a 1941 first-edition collection of twenty-one of her colored illustrations with poems written by Lizzy Ansingh was appraised at $5,000 . Unlike her colleagues, she practiced other genres such as needle art and painting botanical plates. Though her works were not usually in museums, in 1902 the Museum Boymans purchased original drawings from the books “Handie Plal” and “It is Raining in Zenget.” Her pieces are usually displayed in conjunction with Joffers exhibitions. In 1991 she received a major retrospective exhibition in the Amsterdam Historical Museum.
