He was the first settler of Elk Creek Township in Erie County, PA, arriving there in early 1797 from Granby, CT. Photos of Eli and his wife hang in the old church at Lundy's Lane.

According to "A genealogical record of the descendants of Quartermaster George Colton", he settled in Elk Creek, PA in 1797. Also states "He was a man of sturdy individuality, an excellent farmer, and took a prominent part in public affairs, but though offered him, he never held office."

Probably the Eli Colton serving in the War of 1812, under Capt. James Salsburg in the A Co. of the 17th Regt. of PA Militia commanded by Lt. Col. John C. Wallace. His service commenced Jan 3 and ended Feb 6, 1814.
