John attended Dartmouth College and went on to receive his bachelors degree from Allegheny College in 1956, where he focused on mechanical engineering and business administration. After college, he served in Germany for two years, achieving the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army.

He was employed by General Motors, Fisher Body Division, in Detroit, and in 1959 he came north to Gaylord to build cottages and homes. In 1962 he married. He and his wife then acquired the historic Conway Inn on Crooked Lake in Conway, Michigan. It was restored and the name changed to this Ole House. Later, a Motor Lodge was added to the hotel. The resort was very popular among locals and summer residents as well. In addition to lakeside lodging, it provided music by the Epsilon Jazz Band, dancing, and fine dinning.

After leaving the hotel business, John worked in sales and real estate. John was recognized as Realtor of the Year for 2013, for his over 20 years of service with Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors. He had one time been a deacon with the Petoskey Presbyterian Church, and has always been an active community volunteer.

John was proud to be a member of the Rotary Club of Petoskey, serving as past president and named a Paul Harris Fellow. It was through Rotary International that he became passionately involved with PWOJE ESPWA (Project Hope), a charity dedicated to alleviating the devastating effects of extreme poverty on the lives of the children in Haiti. John visited Haiti on two occasions, leading efforts to provide food and clean water to a farming village, orphanage and school, located on the outskirts of Les Cayes, Haiti – home to more than 600 children.

In addition, Mr. Johnson was also a long time board member of Little Traverse Township Planning Commission and the Harbor Springs Area Sewer Disposal Authority.

Mr. Johnson was born to John H. and Marion (Parker) Johnson in Alexandria, Egypt on Aug. 24, 1932. He was raised with his two sisters in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He died at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. John was survived by his wife, sisters, children and grandchildren. He always considered his family his most important accomplishment.

Memorial tributes were asked to be sent to the Rotary Club of Petoskey in support of PWOJE ESPWA (Project Hope). A memorial celebration was held at the Little Traverse Township Hall in January.
