A Pioneer of Johnson County Gathered to His Fathers

Wednesday's Daily

Mr. Wm R. Culley, who died yesterday at Shawnee Mound, was one of the pioneers of Johnson county. Born in Howard county in 1821. He was nearly 78 years of age. Coming to this county in 1836 he has seen the wondrous changes which 63 years have produced. In 1849 he was married to Miss Mary Brown, who died several months later. In 1857 he was married to Miss Louisa C Perry, a native of Tennessee. They became the parents of five children, all of whom are now living. These are Silas P. Culley, Higginsville, Mo.; W. Oliver Culley, in Alaska; Mrs. Lizzie Hinton, Shawnee Mound; Mrs. Jennie Ridley, Warrensburg; and Mrs. Mattie McCann, of Shawnee Mound.

Mr. Culley was at one time the owner of a fine farm of 250 acres east of Chilhowee, but lost it several years ago on account of financial misfortunes. About 12 years ago, he came to Warrensburg and resided with his family on South Missouri avenue. While the family resided in this city his wife died July 23, 1891. For several years he has resided with his daughters, Madames Ridley and Hinton. He died at the residence of the latter.

Funeral services were conducted at Chilhowee today by Rev. A.M. McClelland. The body reached here by way of Holden at 3:18 and was taken the to city cemetery for burial.

Mr. Culley was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Peace in Chilhowee township. He was also a faithful member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. He leaves behind him the memory of a good name, which is "better than riches."

HISTORY OF JOHNSON COUNTY, MISSOURI - Some selected biographies Kansas City Historical Co. 1881.

W. R. CULLEY, P.O. Cornelia. One of the prominent old settlers of Chilhowee township, was born in Howard County, Missouri, in 1821. His father, John Culley was among the pioneers of that county. He was a native of Tennessee, born August 12, 1792, and was a soldier in the War of 1812, having served five years, and after his discharge, settling in Old Franklin, Missouri. He was married in 1820, and in 1836, came to Johnson County, and made it his home until his death, which occurred August 15, 1876. William R. Culley was the eldest of his father's family, and on him rested many cares of the household. He has seen many changes in this county, hardship, privation, as well as enjoyment, which render the memory of those early days especially dear. He was twice married, first to Miss Mary Brown, January 16, 1849, daughter of Samuel Brown. She died in about seven months after marriage. He was again married July 2, 1857 to Miss Louisa C. Perry, a native of Tennessee. They have five children yet living. Mr. Culley has ever taken great interest in the cause of Christianity: himself and family are closely associated with Cumberland Presbyterian Church, to which he has been a liberal contributor. His firm stand for temperance and education have been strongly inculcated in the minds of his family. His well cultivated farm of 250 acres contains a good orchard and well appointed dwelling.
