Enlisted, January 29, 1935, in Troop K, 101st Cavalry Regiment ( Squadron A ), NYNG. His older brother Edward Rush Duer Jr. was a member of Troop K. He served in the ranks of Troop K and was discharged, January 29, 1939.

Enlisted, November 6, 1941, in Company G, 51st Regiment, NYG, Cedarhurst, NY. He was discharged in 1942.

Entered service with the US Army, May 14, 1942, at Fort Jay, Governor Island, NY. Service data and discharge date unknown at this time.

His father Edward Rush Duer served in Squadron A post Spanish American War and in Depot Squadron A 1916 - 17. His brother, Edward Rush Duer, served in the 101st Cavalry (Squadron A) 1934 - 1937. Two of his uncles served in Squadron A, Oothout Z. Whitehead, 1895 - 1898 and William Silas Whitehead, 1895 - 1900, he also mustered in with Troop A, NY Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish American War.
