Thelma L. ‘Renee’ Brown, 93, passed away at her home on December 19, 2014, with her family present.

She was born in Dover, NH, the daughter of Harold M. and Bertha (Meserve) Foss and was preceded in death by all of her siblings. Renee graduated with the class of 1939 at Dover High School where she was active in sports, captain of the undefeated basketball team, and was the drum major.

She is survived by her husband Raymond J. Brown, sons Edward G. (Kristy) and Thomas R. (Sharon) Brown, 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

As the wife of a career US Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer many years were spent serving in Virginia, Hawaii, and North Carolina before returning to New Hampshire to retire in 1984.

Renee coached the women’s Navy basketball team at Pearl Harbor to a winning season while administering the junior sports program for Pearl Harbor, from 1960-63.

She was the recipient of the Presidential Physical Fitness Award 1975. She was a lifetime member of the Durham-Orange County (NC) Bowling Association and was North Carolina State Bowling Champion, 1975-79, placing second in the National Tournament in 1977, all while serving as Director of Married Student Housing at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, 1974-1984.

Renee was a lifelong sports enthusiast, playing semi-professional women’s softball in Norfolk, VA; basketball, bowling and golf, and playing in many Pro-Am Tournaments in Hawaii and Norfolk, VA. Many of the objects in the house bear small plaques denoting honors won in sports.
