The son of William & Mary (Newcomer) Sharp and stepson of Catherine Sharp, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although his family were residents of Marietta. He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Lancaster County September 20, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg October 21 as a private with Co. B, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded in action at the battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, he succumbed to his wounds three days later, although September 21 is also reported as his death day.

On August 1, 1866, his father applied for a pension and received it. His stepmother later applied for a pension but was denied.
