French Nobility. Born at Fossano as the only child of Henri de Valois and his mistress Filippa Duci. In 1541 she and her mother travelled to France, and she was given to Henri's longtime mistress Diane de Poitiers to be raised. In February 1553 she was married to Orazio Farnese, Duke of Castro. Orazio died in July of the same year during the siege of Hesdin. She returned to the court and the supervision of Diane de Poitiers. In 1557 she was married to Francois de Montmorency.
Charles IX made her Duchess of Châtellerault in 1563.Henri III, her other half-brother, later made her Duchess of Étampes. When she was widowed again in 1579 Henri exchanged the Duchy of Châtellerault with the Duchy of Angoulême. With her new income, she was able to build a Hôtel in Paris that is today known as Hôtel Lamoignon. During the wars of religion, she lived mostly in the Touraine. Henri III gave her the government of the Limousin (1594) and later that of the Bourbonnais (1605). She rewarded his trust with her loyalty that even outlasted his death. In 1608 she had his remains transferred from Compiègne to Saint-Denis and in the following year did the same for his mother, who had been buried in Blois. She lived most of her life at the French court. She not only saw the reign of seven Kings, but also survived all of her twelve half-siblings. Her effigy survived the destruction of the convent church and is today housed at the Hôtel Lamoignon.
