Royalty. Born Charles-Maximilien de Valois-Angouleme, second-eldest son of Henri II and Catherine de Medici. He succeeded his brother Francois II on December 5th, 1560. His reign was dominated by civil war and the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre. By his wife Elisabeth of Habsburg, he had a daughter, Marie Elisabeth, who died young. His mistress, Marie Touchet, bore him a son that would survive the following three kings. He was succeeded by his brother Henri, who was the last of the Valois to reign the Kingdom of France.
