WOMAN PEDESTRIAN KILLED; DRIVER HELD

DEATH CAUSED BY FRACTURE OF SKULL

MRS. C. NEUMAN STRUCK ON GRANDVILLE AVE.; MARVIN DIGGS DETAINED

Mrs. Catherine Neuman, 60, 421 Graham st., SW., widow of Robert Neuman, was struck and killed early Saturday evening by an automobile said by police to have been driven by Marvin Diggs, 46, of 814 Ringuette pl., SE.

Diggs, following examination by a physician at the south end police station, was held for investigation of drunken driving. The more serious charge of negligent homicide may be placed against the man.

Patrolmen Joseph McPhilamy and Jacob Moomey, who investigated for the police department, reported that Diggs was driving north on Grandville ave. and struck Mrs. Neuman as she crossed at the Graham st., intersection from east to west. The officers reported she appeared to have been struck on the crosswalk.

CORONOR TO INVESTIGATE

The accident, which happened at 6:40 p.m., brought the total traffic deaths in the city this year to 24 and brought the county total to 57.

Dr. Harmon C. Wolfe, coronor, is investigating. He announced he would hold a post mortem Sunday and doubted an inquest would be necessary in view of the circumstances.

Mrs. Neuman was taken to St. Mary's hospital in a police ambulance and pronounced dead upon arrival. Physicians there reported her death was apparently caused by a skull fracture.

MOTHER OF PRIEST

Mrs. Neuman was a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the St. Joseph Altar society.

She is survived by four sons, Rev. Robert Neuman of Muskegon, and Henry, Philip and Edward of Grand Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. William C. Giffels of Akron, O., and Mrs. Herman Schmitt of Grand Rapids; five brothers, Peter, Frank and Charles Deveraux of Grand Rapids, Patrick Deveraux of Cadillac and William of Saskatchewan; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
